The Fleet Running on Faith
Most fleet operators know their vehicles are exposed the moment they leave the yard. What many underestimate is how expensive that exposure becomes when something goes wrong and there is no dashcam footage to settle the dispute.
South Africa's roads are unforgiving for commercial vehicles. According to RTMC data, South Africa recorded 2,237 fatal crashes involving trucks over a five-year period, averaging more than one fatal truck crash per day. Heavy-load vehicles account for 9.4% of all fatal crashes on South African roads despite making up just 3.3% of registered vehicles. The risk is not theoretical. It is statistical and it compounds with every kilometre your fleet covers.
The question is not whether your vehicles will be involved in an incident. It is what happens when they are.
What Happens Without Footage
A driver clips a car in traffic. The other party claims your driver ran a red light and was travelling at excessive speed. Your driver says the car changed lanes without indicating. There are no cameras, no independent witnesses, and no telematics record of speed at that exact moment.
What follows is predictable. Your insurer, facing a disputed liability claim with no evidence on either side, settles. Your driver receives a charge. Your fleet's claims record takes a hit. Your premium is reviewed at the next renewal. None of this reflects what actually happened, because what actually happened cannot be proven.
This is the default outcome for any fleet operating without cameras. The absence of a camera does not mean the incident goes undocumented. It means it gets documented entirely by the other party, with no counterweight.
False Claims Are Not Rare
The scale of fraudulent and exaggerated claims in South Africa should alarm any fleet manager. South African insurers detected 16,520 cases of fraud and dishonesty in 2024, a 26% increase on the prior year. The Road Accident Fund alone reported preventing fraudulent claims worth nearly R2.7 billion over three financial years, and that is only what was detected and intercepted.
Commercial vehicles are specifically targeted in staged accidents. A high-value truck or bus represents a credible source of compensation: an insured commercial operator with more to lose from a protracted dispute than from a quick settlement. Without footage, your fleet becomes a preferred target. With footage, it becomes the wrong one.
A staged incident is engineered around the assumption that no evidence exists. Remove that assumption and the economics of the fraud collapse entirely.
The True Cost of a Single Disputed Claim
Fleet operators tend to think about accidents in terms of repair bills. The repair is usually the smallest part.
A single at-fault accident involving a commercial vehicle can generate:
- Third-party vehicle repairs: ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of rands depending on the vehicle struck
- Road Accident Fund liability: RAF claims for loss of earnings and general damages can run into the millions for serious injuries, and there is no cap on general damages for serious cases
- Legal and dispute costs: if the matter is contested, attorneys, assessors, and investigators accumulate quickly
- Premium revision: a claims event triggers a review at renewal; a history of two to three at-fault claims can result in significant loading or reduced cover options
- Vehicle downtime: a vehicle off the road during repair, assessment, or while a matter is pending is a vehicle generating no revenue
Without an independent record of what happened, the default outcome in a contested claim is often settlement in favour of the claimant. Dashcam footage provides exactly that independence: a timestamped record that either confirms a driver's account or disproves a false one, before legal costs begin to accumulate.
Your Claims History Is Your Premium
Fleet insurance underwriters work from data. A clean claims record over two to three years translates directly into lower premiums and stronger cover terms. A history of frequent claims, particularly disputed or at-fault events, produces the opposite: higher premiums, loaded excesses, and in some cases policy exclusions that leave portions of your fleet exposed.
Some South African insurers now offer commercial transportation clients premium discounts specifically for dashcam installation. The logic from the insurer’s side is straightforward: cameras reduce disputed claims, reduce fraudulent claims, and produce better driver behaviour. All three reduce the insurer’s exposure, and some of that saving flows back to the operator.
Fleets using AI video systems have seen insurance premiums reduce by 5-20% as a direct result of reduced claims frequency and the availability of verified driving data at claim stage. For a fleet with a R500,000 annual insurance spend, a 15% reduction alone is R75,000 per year in recovered cost, before accounting for any avoided claims.
The Camera Changes the Calculation
A dashcam does not prevent every accident. What it does is change the outcome of every incident it records.
Disputed liability: footage provides an objective, timestamped record of exactly what happened, from the road-facing camera and, in systems like Digisky's, from the driver-facing lens simultaneously. The other party's version of events is tested against reality rather than accepted by default.
Driver behaviour: AI-powered driver monitoring actively detects fatigue, distraction, phone use, and harsh events in real time, delivering in-cab audio and visual alerts before they become incidents. Drivers who know they are monitored drive differently, and the data supports this: fleets deploying AI dashcams with active coaching have recorded up to 40% fewer collisions compared to unmonitored equivalents.
Backing and manoeuvring: a significant proportion of commercial vehicle accidents occur at low speed during reversing, docking, and yard manoeuvres. A rear camera eliminates the blind zone that turns a pedestrian or a loading bay bollard into a claims event.
Remote visibility: cloud-connected systems mean footage is accessible from anywhere, immediately after an incident, without depending on the driver to retrieve and submit a card. Evidence is preserved in real time, not reconstructed after the fact.
The Numbers
Consider a mid-sized fleet of 20 vehicles operating in Gauteng:
- Average of 3 disputed incidents per year, each settled at R150,000 in combined repair, liability, and legal costs: R450,000 per year
- Premium loading from claims history on a R600,000 annual fleet insurance spend at 15%: R90,000 per year
- Combined annual exposure from operating without cameras: ~R540,000
A professionally installed AI dashcam system across 20 vehicles, including rear cameras and cloud connectivity, represents a fraction of that figure, and the savings compound each year the claims record stays clean.
The return is not marginal. For most fleet operators, a single avoided disputed claim recovers the cost of the system entirely.
Digisky installs advanced AI dashcam systems across fleet vehicles of all types, from light commercials to heavy trucks. Our systems include dual 1920P/1080P cameras, real-time ADAS alerts, AI driver monitoring, two-way audio, and always-on cloud connectivity so footage is available from anywhere, the moment you need it.
